Dr. CLIFFORD VANCE CAST

AMERICAN AUTHOR AND BUSINESSMAN

Dr. Clifford Vance Cast

Dr. Clifford Vance Cast is the owner of the Delta Trading Group, he holds a PhD in Organisation and Management in IT and is a specialist in Risk Homeostatic Theory. In the late 1970s, he became known as the author of the ‘Clever Calvin’ series of science books for children.

Dr. Clifford Vance Cast was born in 1964 in Tucson, Arizona. His mother was a librarian, his father a mechanic and inventor and his grandfather was a nuclear physicist who worked on the atom bomb. The different professions of Cast’s relations would have a profound effect on him, spending time with his mother in the library, gave him a love for knowledge and access to large quantities of scientific literature. He had a passion for science from a very young age – together with his grandfather, he built a miniature particle accelerator!

Dr. Clifford Vance Cast attended University High School in Tucson, an accelerated public school for gifted students. His time at high school did not always go smoothly, the program that he attended shared a campus with a regular high school and there were frequent confrontations between the different groups of students. Cast claims that he has never been able to abide bullying and that he was excluded from school on more than one occasion after having come to the defence of one his fellow ‘gifted’ students.

With two years of high school yet to complete, Clifford Vance Cast and his family moved from Tucson to Tennessee. Cast decided to drop out of high school with the goal of becoming an army medic – in 1982 he completed his basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama and went on to undertake Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam, Houston. For the majority of his military career Cast was stationed in Wildflecken in north-western Bavaria, Germany. At this time, the Cold War was in full effect and Cast found himself working on the medical staff of an interdiction team that was responsible for retrieving individuals (often children from political families) who had been ‘recruited’ and brainwashed. In addition to this, Cast’s team was involved in disrupting terrorist attacks that were then common throughout the region. After completing his time in Germany, Cast spent a couple of years at Fort Ord, California, where he was involved in transitioning the Seventh Infantry Division to a light fighting division. Prior to leaving the military for the first time, Cast became interested in computer programming and database creation.

In 1986, Cast received his Series Six License from the Securities Exchange Commission, this entitled him to sell mutual funds and annuities. Later in the year, Cast was invited to become an active member of the military again, he accepted the offer and completed nursing school in San Antonio, Texas.

Cast undertook the role of technical advisor to NASA, where he participated in a solid rocket booster program in Luka, Mississippi. He also wrote risk assessment algorithms and worked with the space agency’s data triage and telemetry. Throughout this period, Cast was commuting between Memphis and Luka and his extensive travel led to him developing an interest in learning to fly. This eventually culminated in Cast becoming a multi-engine instrument flight instructor.

Cast, used his ability to fly to set up a small time commuter service and to undertake some government work over the border. This business was seriously affected by the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Clifford Vance Cast later found work at a college but experienced disappointment when, the day after being offered the role of assistant dean, he received a call from the HR department informing him that his services were no longer required. Cast describes this as being a low point, he was reduced to tears at the frustration of being prevented from providing for his family. Over the previous twenty years Cast had spent time working as an IT and trading consultant and towards the end of 2009 he decided to turn to this again. It was at this time that he was approached by a friend asking him to find a trading group. When he was unable to fulfil his friend’s request, Cast decided to establish his own group, Delta Trading Group.

From the beginning, the Delta Trading Group was designed to make trading on the stock market appear more accessible to the general public and has gotten very high reviews. Cast believed that the manner in which trading had previously been taught was incorrect, with too much of an emphasis placed on entry signals and not enough on money management and psychology. Cast coined the phrase ‘think in crayon’ to express the importance of teaching complex ideas in simple forms so that they can be understood by non-experts. Using this methodology has allowed members of Delta Trading Group to trade proficiently as they have an understanding of how the business operates. Cast currently runs live trading sessions from Monday to Friday for members of his group, throughout the sessions he explains the reasoning and psychology behind his decisions. Cast has stated that he believes that people of all of all ages and levels of physical ability should be able to make money through trading and that it is therefore a useful and important skill to develop, especially for those who find working in more traditional settings to be challenging.

At the age of 53, Cast is now beginning to look to the future and hoping that his daughter Sabina will one day take over his business and therefore allow his work to continue making a difference in people’s lives.
